Benji responds also to the pitch of a voice. He knows vocabulary and He understands "I'll be back" which is his daily routine if I go out. I usually get on his ground level to be with him daily and play bow, and whine or nudge him. From the beginning I have told her what I am doing and where I am going. She has never had separation anxiety . She also has her way of communicating with me. Like your sweet Luke , India positions herself where she can see what I am doing..especially at night, she puts herself at the side of the bed where I get up.
