I live in Vancouver, BC and I find that our city is fairly dog friendly, especially around my neighborhood. We have a lot of off-leash options in terms of parks and trails nearby. We live in an area that is full of condos and townhouses, so the 'dogs per square mile' is fairly high.
Most restaurants will let you have your dog at the patio with you if you're eating outside and many will bring out water (and occasionally a treat) for the pooches.
In my neighbourhood, there are several stores, from small locally owned businesses to larger chain stores, that let you bring the dog into the store with you. A few of them even give the dog treats. Although it is a bit embarrassing when Jasper makes a huge production and drags me into the liquor store to get his bickie!
