Vaccinating

Too many vaccines?

Are we over vaccinating our dogs?  I think so, and the studies show that there is no need for annual vaccinations.  Yet, many owners haven't heard or have had such a fear of not vaccinating their dog yearly that they still head off to the vet for their dog's shots.  A couple of years ago I was at a Veterinarians that claims to be holistic.  As I sat in the waiting room a woman walked in with her elderly dog in her arms.  The Vet Tech told the woman that the dog was due for her annuals plus, bordetella, coronavirus, heartworm medication plus flea and tick.  I shuddered thinking what this poor little was going to be dealt with.  The woman handed her dog over to the Tech and smiled.

I sat with Tilley, waiting.  At that point Tilley had not received an annual shot in over 9 years.  She had titers done with results stating that she was immune to the regular annuals.  No more vaccines needed, so why pump her full of more?  It mades no sense.  Think before you shoot more vaccines into your dog.  Read and research before making the decision to add yet another "new" vaccine that has been introduced.  I am not saying not to vaccinate; I am saying don't over vaccinate.

The only vaccine that is required by Law in many States and Countries is Rabies.  But not all Countries, Provinces or States require it.  Many have taken on the new protocol of every three years which is one tiny step in the right direction.  But so much more needs to be done as far as keeping our dogs safe from over vaccination.  The whole scare tactics that we have been fed for years about yearly vaccines needs to be replaced with facts.  Research, research, research is the only way to find out what is true and what is propaganda to get you to spend more money.  If your Vet is still pushing the yearly vaccinations then you need to arm yourself with factual information.

New vaccines are being created all the time and not for the good of our dogs.

If you have never heard of Titers, this is a good article on what they are all about.  They could save your dog's life.

  1. I agree with you. I did most of my last dogs vaccinations and with this one took him to the vet from the time he was 8 wks when we got him. He ended up a very sickly little guy so we had no choice really. Well he is almost 2 now and I know it is like every 3 months they tell me he needs another vaccination. And I buy his trifexis there so they will not allow me to buy it unless we do these tests and vaccinations. I live in Florida and have found in the past that most other flea control was not effective for my boys and have felt trapped into going here. I haven't decided what exactly to do myself but the idea of every few months having my baby poked and prodded does not set well with me.

  3. After the issues Rory had after her last boosters, I am choosing to do the titers. The vet agrees with me. I am hoping that when it does come time ( as indicated by the titers) that she will not have too bad of a time. She definitely will not be getting two boosters at the same time.

  4. I agree! At 4 months old, I rescued 2 Spoo puppies. They were surrendered by a breeder and had not received their puppy shots.

I nursed them back to health and I feed a whole prey raw diet. once thier immune system was strong - 2 months later - My vet gave them their one and only Adenovirus, distemper and parvovirus vaccination.

At 2 1/2 years later, at 3 years old, here are their titre results.

The numers represent the number of antibodies still in their system.

    Izzie:
    Adenovirus - 1024(16 rquires a booster)
    Distemper - 1536 (32 requires a booster)
    Parvovirus - 1280 (80 requires a booster)

    Draeger:
    Adenovirus - 2048(16 rquires a booster)
    Distemper - 1536 (32 requires a booster)
    Parvovirus - 640 (80 requires a booster)

My vet says they will probably be set for the rest of their life with just the one vaccines.

I will do a titre test every 5 years now just to see where they are. I also dont' use heartworm preventative. I go every 6 months for bloodwork and I dont' use flea preventative. i havent' seen a flea on any of my dogs for 6 years and I live in Virginia. I have heard that if their immune system is really strong, the pests seek out weaker hosts....I don't know if that is the case, but we don't get them. :) If we did, I would use DE powder to get rid of them or another natural remedy.

Thank you Sherry for enlightening others on this issue. :)
